Youth Community Center

The vision for this KYI developed and managed facility is “KYI will be a well-known hub where youth connect with older adults for the development of community endeavors.”

This facility is located three blocks from the center of town, overlooking Ketchikan Creek, providing easy access for all ages, in a section of town occupied mostly by low income families.  This building has two floors.  The street level floor is designed for a café, kitchen and meeting space (available for low rental fees to non profits.)  The lower level provides space to support youth endeavors, particularly youth entrepreneurial business ventures, internet connections for leisure and business travelers, and shared business services including two rental offices, a conference room and work space with printer and other equipment.

KYI young leaders and the Youth Center Steering Committee have been working diligently with the support of the City of Ketchikan, community members and the AmeriCorps NCCC Gold team to redevelop the Old Water Warehouse building into a hub for KYI youth related activities. An eighteen month effort concluded with the transfer of a quit claim deed on the property from the City of Ketchikan to Ketchikan Youth Initiatives in July, 2009. Now we need to attract donations and volunteers to create a new piling foundation and improve the building. KYI young leaders are providing input into the design of the Youth Center.

This building will also house Ketchikan LINK, the centralized database of information about Ketchikan non profit organizations, clubs and groups.  This facility not only provides a headquarters building for KYI but also excellent intern and work experience opportunities for our youth and young adults.
