Youth to Work

In 2007 the Youth to Work job readiness program began in partnership with the Job Center and the Chamber of Commerce.  Youth looking for help in getting a job went through an assessment process, participated in a 12 hour training, were assigned mentors and completed 90 to 100 hours of work experience.  At the end of their program, they were certified “job ready.”  A two week “Basics of  Construction” program allowed eight youth from Ketchikan and Metlakatla to experience first hand the job of a construction worker while journeymen carpenters and laborers completed the renovation of a donated office trailer at the paintball field.

October 2009:  KYI, with the assistance of an AmeriCorps VISTA  member, is reaching out to out-of-school students to help them get back on track to earn their high school diploma or G.E.D., move on to advanced education and training opportunities, either post-secondary education or vocational training.  We anticipate reopening the partnership with the Job Center to deliver the job readiness training when their staffing is complete.
